Kiln works with architects, designers and founder-led businesses on projects where design, presentation and decision-making need to develop together.
The answer might be a drawing, a model, a sequence, a decision taken in the room, or a better way of holding the work together. The value lies in the decision, not in the output alone.
Kiln is led by Oliver Hessian, whose work has been shaped by fifteen years inside and alongside architecture practices. He has held design authority on some projects and supported it on others, and has designed on his own account throughout. That experience sits behind the studio’s ability to move between design, communication and delivery without treating them as separate problems.
Kiln works close to the work, and closely with the team around it. The aim is not to add a layer at the end, but to help the work become coherent while it is still forming.
Making
Kiln’s judgment comes through making. The studio draws, models, edits and tests enough of the problem to understand the best way to resolve it.
This is what separates the studio from a purely advisory role. Suggestions are not made from distance alone. They come from working through the material of the project.
Range
The scale changes, but the method does not. A piece of furniture, a room, a building, a public realm system or a practice’s own communication can all be approached with the same rigour.
What matters is not the category of the brief, but whether design is what will make the work clearer, stronger and more usable.
Capacity
Kiln remains small, but the studio scales when the work requires it. Larger projects are built around trusted collaborators, clear structure and careful control of the working process.
That allows the studio to stay close to the work while carrying projects that need more hands around them.
